Basement Mania
Some of our loyal readers out there might have heard that I took on a large project on the side over the past few months. It's consumed a fair amount of time, and a lot of sweat on my behalf. Our friends the Koskis have a cool home in NE Mpls, and back in December we started the first steps towards remodeling their basement. The first disclaimer is that this wasn't your run of the mill basement, I'm 85% sure that the Brady Bunch actually designed it. Well--maybe they just chose the wallpaper and the shag red carpeting (on the walls in addition to the floor). Either way, it needed some help. So the Koskis were kind enough to hire me on, and early one Saturday morning I loaded up the vehicle and the wheels started turning on a 250 hour project.
The first step was demolition. Demo is fun. And Mike and Emily were eager to swing the sledgehammers too--so we went at it for a full day, and came out quite dusty.
So, after two dumpsters---everything was gone. I started work from a bare bones basement. Slowly things progressed--Framing, electrical, plumbing, tiling, windows, doors, and soon enough it was sheetrock time.
Sheetrock dude took a little longer than anticipated, but it ended up being a nice little break. After that we painted in a matter of days with great help from Mike, Emily and one of Emily's friends assisting. The carpeters were in and out quickly, and then there was a few days of trimming and odds and ends. After all those hours, the project is finally complete. It definitely feels good to be done, but with buidling the best part is knowing that the whole project is kind of your art piece...something that you uniquely created...so I suppose just like a painter...you go through withdrawl when you're finally done with a piece. I'm already looking forward to the next project--but it'll be nice to have that project be at home! So, here are the pre-furnished finished basement pictures. Here's to never having to vacuum the walls again! Mike and Emily---enjoy.
